Summary

Bitter and merciless war is coming to the frozen north。 It's bloody and dangerous and the Union army, split by politics and hamstrung by incompetence, is utterly unprepared for the slaughter that's coming。 Lacking experience, training, and in some cases even weapons the army is scarcely equipped to repel Bethod's scouts, let alone the cream of his forces。

In the heat-ravaged south the Gurkish are massing to assault the city of Dagoska, defended by Inquisitor Glokta。 The city is braced for the inevitable defeat and massacre to come, preparations are made to make the Gurkish pay for every inch of land 。。。 but a plot is festering to hand the city to its beseigers without a fight, and the previous Inquisitor of Dagoska vanished without trace。 Threatened from within and without the city, Glokta needs answers, and he needs them soon。

And to the east a small band of malefactors travel to the edge of the world to reclaim a device from history - a Seed, hidden for generations - with tremendous destructive potential。 A device which could put a end to war, to the army of Eaters in the South, to the invasion of Shanka from the North - but only if it can be found, and only if its power can be controlled 。。。

Book two is always the trickiest in a trilogy。 It has to do a lot of leg work to bring us to the final book but also be more then a bridge。 Before They Are Hanged does a great job of both。 The character work is excellent as all our characters grow and expand in ways that seem just and tug on your heart strings。 Being in the dark about some of the journey, like some of our characters, really serviced the characters。 We’re in the same boat as them and our lack of knowledge allows us to focus on th Book two is always the trickiest in a trilogy。 It has to do a lot of leg work to bring us to the final book but also be more then a bridge。 Before They Are Hanged does a great job of both。 The character work is excellent as all our characters grow and expand in ways that seem just and tug on your heart strings。 Being in the dark about some of the journey, like some of our characters, really serviced the characters。 We’re in the same boat as them and our lack of knowledge allows us to focus on them opposed to the next part of the mission。 The action is intense and without mercy。 Although I really enjoyed the times the story gave us the inside look at the war room before thrusting us right into the battle。 Adds new layers and dimensions to the action。 I will say that the book kind of just ends in a way where you wished there was another chapter。 I know that’s part of the draw to get you to read book three but I could’ve used one more chapter to send us home。 All and all I’m psyched for book three。 I honestly have no idea how this will end and that’s a large part of the fun。 。。。more

I liked this a lot and thought it was a shoe-in for 5 stars until a couple of anticlimaxes occurred towards the end。 This hasn’t dissuaded me from heading straight on to the final book in the trilogy to find out how the story ends though。 It’s great stuff。

Even better than the first! Each character gets a lot of development and the plot progresses so much further than the first book! The characters continue to shine, especially in the case of Jezal, Ferro, and Major West, but the pacing and plot drag even slower than the previous instalment。

Me ha gustado incluso más que el primero。 Me quedo con ciertas incógnitas que espero se resuelvan con el último libro de la trilogía。 Sin duda le veo futuro a mi nuevo romance con este autor。

The second in the The First Law books did not disappoint as we were back with the same characters from the first installment continuing in journeys in different parts of the world。 War has started but those who are corrupt and senseless are leaders whilst the burden to win falls on the good and powerless。 As usual the dialogues had me giggling throughout and all time favourite Glotka was a beacon as he stumbled his way from one country to another trying to prevent injustice but being caught up i The second in the The First Law books did not disappoint as we were back with the same characters from the first installment continuing in journeys in different parts of the world。 War has started but those who are corrupt and senseless are leaders whilst the burden to win falls on the good and powerless。 As usual the dialogues had me giggling throughout and all time favourite Glotka was a beacon as he stumbled his way from one country to another trying to prevent injustice but being caught up in the politics to make grim choices。 His inner monologues is what I looked forward; his truth in sarcasm and humour whilst he tries to navigate away from corruption but it seems to follow him across the seas。 The plot is a slow building journey for the characters as ultimately the aim is to defeat the tyrant in the north and the one perilous threat looming across the seas。 I feel Abercrombie uses the characters flaws to reflect injustice and corruption within our world whilst being entertaining at the same time。 The characters growth such as Jezal who is spoilt, arrogant and haughty inexperienced soldier at the start changes for the better as he learns hardship and true friendship。 Other faves are Logan, Ferro and even West grew on me in this one。 I enjoyed the writing style and the narrative tone which has me excited for the following books。 。。。more

An improvement over a solid first entry。 More sex。 More violence。 And more humanity。

A very good second book that introduces some new and interesting characters。 This book definitely expands the world and explains some of the circumstances that I just accepted in the first book。

What an outstanding story。 It’s like listening to a Guy Ritchie movie on a medieval set。 The characters are colorful, with vivid personalities。 He interweaves there story in such a way that it’s hard to put down。 Very well done。 Can’t wait to see what happens in the next volume。

Superb second book of this trilogy。 All the promise in book 1 was met。 It exceeded my high expectations and I love/hate all the characters even more now。 One chapter were Ninefingers fights a load of flatheads single handed in a Berserker rage had me cheering and clapping and the following chapter was the funniest sex scene I've ever read。 Really looking forward to completing the trilogy next month and exploring more of Joe 'Lord Grim Darks' work。 A well deserved 5* Superb second book of this trilogy。 All the promise in book 1 was met。 It exceeded my high expectations and I love/hate all the characters even more now。 One chapter were Ninefingers fights a load of flatheads single handed in a Berserker rage had me cheering and clapping and the following chapter was the funniest sex scene I've ever read。 Really looking forward to completing the trilogy next month and exploring more of Joe 'Lord Grim Darks' work。 A well deserved 5* 。。。more

An outstanding second book of the trilogy, even if I felt one of the storyline's conclusion was a bit of a letdown。 This was a highly compelling narrative that hooked you early and never let you go。 The brilliance of the first book to me was it's characters, and that continued in this volume, but what impressed me most of this volume was the plotting。 Abercrombie deftly juggled the three main plot lines in this 500+ page book with true mastery, in that I never felt that any story overstayed it's An outstanding second book of the trilogy, even if I felt one of the storyline's conclusion was a bit of a letdown。 This was a highly compelling narrative that hooked you early and never let you go。 The brilliance of the first book to me was it's characters, and that continued in this volume, but what impressed me most of this volume was the plotting。 Abercrombie deftly juggled the three main plot lines in this 500+ page book with true mastery, in that I never felt that any story overstayed it's welcome, nor disappeared too long。 I'm definitely excited for the last book of the trilogy! 4。5/5 。。。more

Another great entry in the series。 Middles of trilogies are hard to stand out, but this one built character well, defined what the author wanted to do and made me realize I really love this series and put it as one I will recommend to fantasy readers。

I enjoyed this one a lot。 With the characters established in the last book, I got to enjoy their storylines considerably more in the middle book。 Some thoughts in no particular order。- I didn't care much for the trip of Bayaz&Co's journey through the Old Empire, even though the character development is still really really good。 - There was a couple/pairing that I DID NOT SEE COMING towards the end of the book that ended up being simultaneously heartwarming and sad。- Collem West doing his best to I enjoyed this one a lot。 With the characters established in the last book, I got to enjoy their storylines considerably more in the middle book。 Some thoughts in no particular order。- I didn't care much for the trip of Bayaz&Co's journey through the Old Empire, even though the character development is still really really good。 - There was a couple/pairing that I DID NOT SEE COMING towards the end of the book that ended up being simultaneously heartwarming and sad。- Collem West doing his best to deal with maddening incompetence at every turn is gosh darn funny - it makes my schadenfreude tingle。 - And Gloka, ah Glokta, you are peerless in your darkened cynicism of the world, and it's a dark privilege to see the world through your reddened, rheumy eyes。 。。。more

3。5 starsI liked this slightly more than the first book so I'll round up this time。 I have some slight reservations around the usual things that I do with most straight white male fantasies, but I do really love Joe Abercrombie's writing style and these characters, and I do recognise that this is a grimdark fantasy so some sexism/racism/fatphobia/other bad ideologies exist in this world。 The plot is still fairly non existent, but I don't mind because the characters are really great, and even the 3。5 starsI liked this slightly more than the first book so I'll round up this time。 I have some slight reservations around the usual things that I do with most straight white male fantasies, but I do really love Joe Abercrombie's writing style and these characters, and I do recognise that this is a grimdark fantasy so some sexism/racism/fatphobia/other bad ideologies exist in this world。 The plot is still fairly non existent, but I don't mind because the characters are really great, and even the ones I didn't care for in book 1 kind of grew on me。 。。。more

Not much to tell that I haven't already mentioned in my review of 'The Blade Itself', really。Like the first entry in the trilogy, this is character-driven grimdark fantasy from the author who is said to have invented the genre。 It excels in its authentic dialogue and world-building, and in some (not all) of the character arcs (Jezal's and Glokta's come to mind)。 It's also short on plot and story。Although better than the first book, it still leaves some things to be desired。 There's too much repe Not much to tell that I haven't already mentioned in my review of 'The Blade Itself', really。Like the first entry in the trilogy, this is character-driven grimdark fantasy from the author who is said to have invented the genre。 It excels in its authentic dialogue and world-building, and in some (not all) of the character arcs (Jezal's and Glokta's come to mind)。 It's also short on plot and story。Although better than the first book, it still leaves some things to be desired。 There's too much repetition for my taste (how many times can an author state in the exact same words that a character's leg or back is hurting without it becoming annoyingly tedious?), and although I do realize that this is grimdark, literally no one - and I do mean no one - ever gets a break or a lucky turn of events。 Everyone is thoroughly miserable all the time which, after more than 500 pages, takes - at least for me - some of the fun of reading away。 Good, but not great。 。。。more

Hard to say it is an improvement over the first book since it fully feels like a part 2 to a larger story with nary so much as a beginning-middle-end, but story isn’t a necessity for good books ‘round here。 Abercrombie is clearly heavily inspired by Martin with his approach to the genre, but also separates himself by being more colorful, comedic and brutal in the same measure。 The portrayal of humanity and characters in the book being so shrouded in grey and devoid of the idea of “good vs evil”, Hard to say it is an improvement over the first book since it fully feels like a part 2 to a larger story with nary so much as a beginning-middle-end, but story isn’t a necessity for good books ‘round here。 Abercrombie is clearly heavily inspired by Martin with his approach to the genre, but also separates himself by being more colorful, comedic and brutal in the same measure。 The portrayal of humanity and characters in the book being so shrouded in grey and devoid of the idea of “good vs evil”, brings maturity and realism to a genre defined by it’s penchant to lean into escapism。 The theme of disillusionment runs heavily through this book and it’s idea that disillusionment can make you a more empathetic, mature and thoughtful human stood out very strongly to me。 There is not much force to drive the narrative but the writing and internal monologues between each of the main characters are so diverse and strong that you are compelled forward on the back of those elements alone。 。。。more

If I can offer any advice to people considering Joe Abercrombie's work it'd be to listen to the audiobooks by Steven Pacey。 His performance is magnificent and truly brings this vivid, gritty world to life。One of the biggest achievements in this series is making the plot filled with mystery whilst still achieving a sense of direction, pace and finality at climaxes。 We are still in the dark about so much of the lore and history around this world but it really doesn't matter as we follow the charac If I can offer any advice to people considering Joe Abercrombie's work it'd be to listen to the audiobooks by Steven Pacey。 His performance is magnificent and truly brings this vivid, gritty world to life。One of the biggest achievements in this series is making the plot filled with mystery whilst still achieving a sense of direction, pace and finality at climaxes。 We are still in the dark about so much of the lore and history around this world but it really doesn't matter as we follow the characters specific journeys with such interest。Colonel West's story with the baptism of 'furious' and his moral turmoil after Ladisla's demise is one of my favourite story arcs。 The complexity of character and inner conflict is something Abercrombie achieves that I think it unparalleled。 He also expertly chisels and perfects Ninefingers and Luthar into equally complex and deep characters。 In comparison with The Blade Itself, where Glokta is the undisputed star, this book manages to make each of the three competing narratives as intriguing and surprising as the others。 This book is magnificent and builds on what was tantalizingly close to a masterpiece in the first instalment。 It is simply phenomenal and I would recommend it to anyone! 。。。more
